The Tories can still not be trusted as they continue to fail to get to grips with inflation

It is shocking some meat, yoghurt and vegetables have doubled in price compared to a year ago.

This situation was not inevitable – it was caused by the Tories.

Their poor governance, 13 years of austerity and support for a hard Brexit have ruined our public services and left our economy in tatters.

Liz Truss then made the situation even worse during her catastrophic stint in charge, with her kamikaze economic policies of slashing taxes for the super-wealthy and increasing borrowing.

All of this caused the cost of living to rise even more.

Since Rishi Sunak came into office, the UK Government has failed to get to grips with inflation.

It should have given more support to households and businesses to help with the increased energy costs, which could have been funded by a proper windfall tax on the energy companies which have made record-breaking profits.

He has promised to half inflation by the end of the year, but that does nothing for families struggling right now.

And given the Tories have done very little to stop inflation up until now, it is likely they will also fail in that pledge.

It is the poorest in our society who are suffering the most from the sky-high cost of food. More and more people are turning to food banks. Many have already suffered, going without heating in the winter.

The Government must step in now to provide proper support to working-class families so they can meet their daily needs.

Dirty tricks

Nowhere is safe, it seems, from the deluge of sewage swamping our waterways.

From our internationally recognised wetlands, to our many vital homes for endangered birds and other species, to prized waters such as the Firth of Forth, this waste dumping epidemic is happening everywhere.

The finding that more than a dozen places with special environmental protections were flooded with 3000 Olympic pools’ worth of sewage last year is truly shocking.

Sadly, for Record readers, it will no longer be surprising.

As we’ve reported in recent weeks, sewer overflows dumped filth into our rivers more than 14,000 times in 2022 that we know of.

But with just a fraction of those actually monitored by Scottish Water, that could just be the tip of the iceberg.

It’s long past time the SNP-Green government got a grip of this issue. That starts with building a full picture.

We can no longer turn a blind eye to the threat of sewage pollution in our precious natural environment.
