The top five most and least vaccinated areas in the North East

These are the areas in the North East that have the highest and the lowest coronavirus vaccine uptake rates, according to the latest figures.

The Government's interactive map shows that only 38.0% of people aged 12 and over in Newcastle city centre and Arthur's Hill had received a second jab up to December 10 while just 44.7% had their first dose.

Second doses were also below 60% in Nunsmoor, Durham City and Sunderland Central, and Deptford.

Meanwhile, the area with the biggest take up was Whickham with 88.4% receiving their second jab while 93.5% had their first dose.

It comes as Boris Johnson confirmed that booster jabs will be available to every adult over the age of 18 in England from Monday.

In the pre-recorded statement on Sunday evening, Mr Johnson said we were facing a "tidal wave of Omicron" and said a population that was not boosted would risk "a level of hospitalisation that could overwhelm the NHS".

Mr Johnson told the nation: "I am afraid we are now facing an emergency in our battle with the new variant, Omicron, and we must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection to keep our friends and loved ones safe.

"We know from bitter experience how these exponential curves develop.

"No-one should be in any doubt: there is a tidal wave of Omicron coming, and I’m afraid it is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need."

The UK Covid alert level was also raised from Level 3 to Level 4 following a rapid increase in Omicron cases being recorded.
