The top fitness trends people are doing at home in lockdown

HIIT has been named the most popular fitness trend in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic.

With people spending more time at home than ever, it has had nearly a 60% increase in the number of Google searches during the past few months.

The global survey by Reebok revealed the second most popular is weight training with nearly a 30% search increase, followed by yoga, spinning and pilates also making the top five.

HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise alternated with low-intensity recovery periods, usually with the workout lasting from ten to 30 minutes.

Joe Mitton, Personal Trainer at  MittFit said lots of people are seeing the benefits of HIIT workouts and the ease of doing them from home 'combined with the abundance of great trainers offering incredible daily workouts across the world'.

He added: "The soar in popularity will continue post-lockdown now that people have seen the benefit and created the habits.

"Yoga has increased in popularity as people have had a massive shift in their working patterns and with more people working from home and spending an abundance of time sat behind a computer, yoga is the perfect remedy for stiffness and 'tech neck.'"

Keith McNiven, Personal Trainer and founder of  Right Path Fitness explained how high intensity training is beneficial.

She said: "HIIT can be super effective in getting your metabolic rate high, which lasts for hours after exercise, and it can be done anywhere - with or without equipment.

"For instance, you could do sprints, burpees or grab a skipping rope and give yourself a pretty extensive workout, for free, at your convenience."
