The Top 5 Highest-Paid NFL Players After Monday's Big Signing

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a deal with quarterback Jalen Hurts worth $255 million over five years.

The contract is the largest in NFL history with an average annual value (AAV) of $51 million per year. The 24-year-old secured the contract after Hurts led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance in February. He was also the runner-up in the MVP ballot.

While Hurts’ deal is the largest deal in terms of AAV in league history, he is only guaranteed $179 million. The Eagles have yet to disclose other financial information on Hurts’ contract.

Controversial Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson owns the largest guaranteed money after signing a fully guaranteed five-year deal worth $230 million last year.

Patrick Mahomes, who edged Hurts for MVP last season, owns the largest contract in NFL history in terms of total salary. He signed a 10-year deal worth $450 million with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.

The NFL signed TV deals worth over $110 billion running until 2033, and that has helped raise team salary cap. This year’s salary cap is at $224.8 million per team, nearly 8% higher than in 2022, and is one of the drivers leading to historic contracts like Hurts’ that have been signed over the last several years.

Here are the five highest NFL players by average annual salary after today’s massive announcement:

  1. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles - $51 million per year agreed to in 2023, full deal is 5 years/$255 million with $179 million guaranteed

  3. Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos - $48.5 million per year signed in 2022, full deal is 5 years/$242.5 million with $161 million guaranteed
  4. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals - $46.1 million per year signed in 2022, full deal is 5 years/$230.5 million with $159 million guaranteed
