The top 10 Scottish songs as chosen by the Record readers

As part of the search to find some of Scotland's best songs, we asked you on social media to tell us your favourites.

From the sheer volume of responses, it's clear that many of these incredible hits are close to your heart.

Surprisingly, the likes of Garbage, Wet Wet Wet, Annie Lennox and even Talking Heads didn't make the list.

While newer acts like Lewis Capaldi, Calvin Harris, and Biffy Clyro were also not as popular.

Don't worry though, the classics such as Deacon Blue, Runrig and of course, the Proclaimers are all represented.

In no particular order, here are your top 10. The question is though, which of these would be your ultimate pick?

Deacon Blue - Dignity

From the moment the intro to this top hit for Scots band Deacon Blue kicks in, you are already smiling from ear to ear.

With poignant lyrics coupled with a heady pop beat, Dignity was always going to be an instant classic.

Proclaimers: 500 Miles

Of course the Proclaimers made the list. (Roberto Ricciuti/Redferns)

The unofficial anthem of Scotland was hugely popular and rightly so. You loved it for its ability to get anyone, be they Scottish or not on their feet joining in.

An honourable mention must go to Sunshine on Leith though, which also ranked highly.

Del Amitri: Always the last to know

Known for their feel good hits, Justin Currie's band beat out some other well known acts to make the list.

Thankfully they made it for their brilliantly catchy single 'Always the last to know', and not their slightly less catchy Official Team Scotland song for the World Cup in '98.

Runrig: Loch Lomond

Runrig wowing the crowds in Stirling. (SO/Reach)

The song that rings out in wedding venues across the country, is another example of how good Scottish music can be - especially when produced by one of the country's top bands and unlikely rock icons, Runrig.

Waterboys: The Whole of the Moon

Another surprising entry sees the ever popular Waterboys make the list with their hit song 'Whole of the Moon'.

With lyrics inspired by the idea that there always more to life waiting to be discovered - as well as offering a cautionary tale about doing too much too soon, it seems this classic song resonated with many of you.

Dougie MacLean: Caledonia

Guaranteed to quickly have any Scottish ex pat with a tear or two in their eye, this love letter to the country we all call home was one of your most popular choices.

Though many of you opted for the original sung by writer Dougie Maclean, almost as many loved the Frankie Miller version.

7.Texas: I Don't Want a Lover

After bursting onto the scene in the late 90s, it didn't take long for Texas and singer Sharleen Spiteri to leave a lasting impression, particularly with this song which was one of their biggest hits.

Travis: Why does it always rain on me

It was inevitable that Fran Healy and Travis would make this list, with a brilliant song that could only have been written by a Scottish band.

Paulo Nutini: Pencil Full of Lead

The perfect feel good hit from the singer with one of the most distinctive voices in the business. Paolo's Pencil Full of Lead perfectly captures that energy you only get from a great day when nothing can stop you.

An honourable mention has to go to Last Request, which was also a hugely popular choice.

Big Country: In a Big Country

A huge hit in the 80s, In a Big Country, rocketed Scottish band in to stardom and deservedly so.

Another favourite with Scots, it usually finds its way on to lists such as this one.
