The top 10 most loyal dog breeds have been announced

The most loyal dog breeds have been revealed – and they include Glasgow’s favourite dog.

The American Kennel Club has shared a list of the top 10 breeds known for their fealty and loyalty.

Their findings include Labrador Retrievers which has previously been found to be Glasgow’s favourite breed.

Others on their list include Beagles, German Shepherds and Chihuahuas, just to name a few.

Although all dogs can be loyal, especially when they’re shown love and kindness, here’s the top 10 picked out by American Kennel Club:

1. Akita

Have you heard about the Japanese Akita dog, called Hachiko, who waited at a train station for his dead master to return, every day for almost a decade? Now that’s loyalty.

2. Beagle

As hunting dogs, Beagles traditionally hunted in packs and are very happy following their leader (or their owner). They are thought to bond particularly well with children too.

3. Boxer

Boxer dogs may have a fighting breed name, but in fact, they are a very protective-minded dog, and quite patient too.

4. German Shepherd

These big dogs are often used in the army and police forces, as they are incredibly loyal and reliable, and put themselves on the line for those in their care.

5. Collie

There was a reason Lassie was a Collie - these dogs go all in for their families. You can really rely on them.

6. Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers seem to get on with everyone - humans, other dogs, even, on occasion, cats. They can be loyal and loving to all.

7. Chihuahua

Chihuahuas have been bred to be loyal, and tend to attach themselves to an individual and not want to let go. In fact, many would rather not be left alone at all.

8. Rottweiler

They may sometimes be considered aggressive, but with a solid pack leader guiding them, Rottweilers can be protective, loyal and a strong companion.

9. Newfoundland

This breed tends to love children - hence why one was the ‘nanny’ in Peter Pan, who looked after the three Darling children. Huge too, they’re great for a cuddle.

10. Skye Terrier

Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier, stood guard at his master's grave in Edinburgh for 14 years. What dog could be more devoted?
