The Tom Wood incident that's left rugby fans outraged in European Champions Cup

Many fans have been left bemused after Northampton's Tom Wood escaped a red card during their Champions Cup defeat to Leinster on Saturday.

With 10 minutes left of Leinster's 35-19 victory, the England back-row was penalised for a dangerous clearout on Josh van der Flier.

Remarkably though, he escaped without being dismissed - despite making contact with the head of the Leinster flanker.

Despite replays showing clear contact between Wood's leading shoulder and van der Flier's head, referee Pierre Brousset dismissed any notion of a penalty sanction, calling it an "accidental collision".

"For me, there is no foul play. Seven black attempts to grab the player and make good cleanout," he added in conversation with his TMO.

In the BT Sport commentary box, opinion was split - with former players Dylan Hartley and Brian O'Driscoll largely agreeing with the official's decision.

"I'm on board," said former England hooker Hartley.

"It's not like he's flown in recklessly. He's checked his feet, slowed down and identified what he's doing.

"I don't think it's foul play. It's a clearout."

Former Leinster and Ireland centre O'Driscoll sympathised with Wood, claiming that there wasn't much more he could have done.

"I think that is a rugby incident," he said.

"But it's hard to differentiate between a rugby incident and dangerous play.

"It's hard to know what the answer is. It's hard to go any lower there."

However, lead commentator Ryle Nugent pointed out that, regardless of whether Wood couldn't go lower, the contact made wasn't legal.

"It's a direct collision to the head with the shoulder," he said.

"This is where we're getting into that conversation of, whatever the circumstances, if there is collision between a head and a shoulder, the decision is already made for him (the referee)."

On social media, many supporters and pundits expressed their surprise that no action was taken against Wood - especially in a week when legal action was launched concerning brain injuries suffered by players.

One user posted on social media: "Commentary and ref's call completely wrong there. "Nowhere for Tom Wood's shoulder to go". How about he doesn't make shoulder contact with the player's head? Are we not in the midst of a brain damage in rugby scandal?"

Another took to Twitter to say: "How has Tom Wood not been sent off there? The citing officer is surely going to take a different view to the ref there. Horrible shoulder-to-head clearout."

And Irish rugby writer Pat McCarry said it "should be a red for Tom Wood. That's the way it has to be now."
