The Best Luxury Mattress Award is reserved for the most indulgent beds on the market today. But it doesn’t necessarily equate to the most expensive — we’re looking for high-quality materials, expert craftsmanship and superior comfort and support.
Competition this year has been at an all time high, with brands upping the stakes and introducing more luxury features — like a whopping 29 layer bed, snoring detection capabilities and more.
But the Saatva Classic, rated as our number one best mattress of the year, has taken the crown thanks to its near perfect 23 out of 25 score in our Saatva Classic mattress review.
With a handcrafted finish and a cloud-like feel, it’s not surprising. Below, we’re sharing exactly why the Saatva has won the coveted Tom's Guide Sleep Award of Best Luxury Mattress.

Saatva is synonymous with luxury
The Saatva Classic is a handcrafted hybrid mattress made up of coils, a steel coil base, a plush pillow top and high-density memory foam.
With five layers, the bed comes in two different heights (11.5” and 14.5”) and three firmness options (Plush, Luxury Firm and Firm). The ability to customize the mattress is why we think it suits almost every type of sleeper.
But what makes it luxurious? Let’s start with its next-level lumbar support. Combining a memory foam lumbar crown and Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire beneath the pillow-top layer means this is a mattress that elevates you as well as cushioning your body.
The result? Perfect alignment no matter what position you sleep in, making it one of the best mattresses for back pain you can buy.
The Saatva Classic is also made to order, handcrafted in the U.S. using high-quality materials. You won’t find cheap materials like fiberglass, but instead natural, eco-alternatives like thistle pulp.

Part of a luxury bed is how it feels. The Saatva boasts an indulgent, hotel feel for every type of sleeper without sacrificing proper support. The 3” zoned quilted pillow top contours to your body and provides the perfect amount of ‘sink-in softness’, making you feel as if you’re suspended in a cloud.
And what’s the use of investing in a luxury mattress if it’s not going to last? The steel coils of the Saatva are tempered three times, and this, along with the natural and high-quality materials, makes the Classic incredibly durable — it’s no surprise you’re offered a lifetime warranty with your purchase.
Expect high-end perks like free, white glove delivery too (removal of your old mattress and the set up of your new one). With a near-perfect review score, it’s difficult to fault the Saatva. We’d like to see a larger weight capacity for heavier sleepers (it’s currently only 600lbs) and free returns would be a nice addition, too.
Saatva’s biggest competitors fail to match the luxury associated with the brand. DreamCloud offers a more affordable alternative in the DreamCloud Classic mattress, a hybrid known for its excellent value for money, but it's missing the attention to detail when it comes to lumbar support. For closer testing data, read our full DreamCloud mattress review to compare the two.
Similarly, the Helix Midnight Luxe, rated as our best mattress for side sleepers, gives the Saatva a run for its money thanks to the excellent cushioned pillow-top layer. However, without the option to customize, it doesn’t quite measure up for all sleepers.
