The timings for the Welsh Government cabinet meeting on Tuesday on the final Covid rules before Christmas

Wales' cabinet is meeting again on Tuesday, December 21, as ministers discuss whether to introduce any further Covid restrictions to be introduced after Christmas.

Everyone's Christmas plans are currently up in the air as the Omicron variant continues to drive new cases and fears of widespread Covid deaths.

The Welsh Government has already announced that nightclubs will be closing after Christmas and on Monday confirmed that sports teams will now have to play behind closed doors whatever the level of the sport.

People are crying out for clarity about what the rules are going to be both for Christmas Day itself and for hospitality afterwards, especially after seeing such scaled back festivities last winter.

When will further restrictions be announced?

WalesOnline understands there will be a cabinet meeting today (December 21) at around 3pm. There the Welsh Government will consider if further restrictions are needed heading into Christmas.

If they decide that further restrictions will be imposed these will be announced on the morning of Wednesday, December 22. If there are to be no further restrictions then this will be announced this evening.

The First Minister has previously indicated that the one remaining unresolved area is whether there should be restrictions on hospitality and people meeting.

He said that a "rule of six" for people gathering was unlikely to be the first step in a move back into restrictions but table service in restaurants and other Covid rules in hospitality are believed to be part of the considerations.

Could any more restrictions be announced before Christmas?

The Welsh Government has indicated that whatever the result of the cabinet meeting this will be the last set of Covid restrictions announced for Wales before December 25.

This news comes after Omicron cases in Wales rose significantly over the weekend after several weeks of stability. Wales has not seen the sustained rises in cases that have hit Scotland or London but experts believe that it only a matter of weeks behind the areas that have seen dramatically rising case rates.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board now has more than 100 cases, the most of any health board, followed by Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB and Swansea Bay UHB. The speed of the increase suggests exponential growth such as we have seen in England and Scotland.
