The timeline of Everton midfielder Andre Gomes' remarkable recovery from ankle injury

November, 3 2019

Gomes suffers the horror injury at Goodison in a game with Tottenham Hotspur. 

The Portuguese midfielder's right ankle gives way after he loses his balance following a Son Heung-Min lunge from behind.

Son is initially cautioned by referee Martin Atkinson but the official upgrades it to a red card after seeing the extent of Gomes' injury.

Later that evening, Everton confirm the 26-year-old was taken to Aintree Hospital and will undergo surgery the following day on a fracture dislocation in his right ankle.

November 4

Everton say Gomes' surgery went "extremely well" on the same day Spurs appeal to the Football Association against Son's dismissal.

November 5

Son wins his appeal against the red card.

Gomes, on crutches, returns to Finch Farm to visit his Everton team-mates and thank them for their support.

Gomes posts video message to thank Evertonians for support

November 7

Marco Silva reveals that Everton's medical department have told him it is possible Gomes will play again before the end of the season.

"What's in our mind, and the feedback I have from our medical staff, is that it's possible we will see Andre playing again this season."

Gomes returns to Portugal to recuperated after his surgery.

November 18

Gomes is back at Everton's Halewood training complex to begin his rehabilitation.

January 10, 2020

Carlo Ancelotti confirms Gomes will return to the training pitches at Finch Farm to begin "individual" work .  The Italian also reveals that the midfielder is two-three weeks ahead of schedule.

January 28

Gomes is involved in part of training with the rest of the Everton first-team in a significant step on his road to recovery.

January 31

At his pre-match press conference, Ancelotti reveals the plan is for Gomes to return to the matchday squad in time for the following month's visit to Arsenal.

The Italian describes Gomes return as an "amazing recovery".

February 7

Ancelotti confirms plans for Everton to play a behind-closed-doors game at Finch Farm during the winter break, to help aid Gomes' recovery.

February 16

Gomes plays in the hour-long game and comes through unscathed with the club reporting: "The Everton midfielder played the full 60 minutes in an 11-a-side game made up of Blues first-team players and Under-23s, with no issues reported by the Club’s medical staff."

February 18
