The time an elephant was paraded in front of huge crowd outside Hyde Park Picture House

Hyde Park Picture House certainly isn't short of a story or two.

The iconic venue in Leeds is the only cinema in the entire world to still be lit with gas lamps, which were installed more than 100 years ago in 1914.

It has also remarkably survived two world wars, enjoyed a welcome renaissance in the 1950's after briefly shutting down and is currently undergoing a massive overhaul to add a second screen.

But perhaps the most bizarre tale in its rich and illustrious heritage is from 1959, when an elephant was paraded outside the cinema as part of a huge promotion.

In the build-up to the screening of The Big Hunt - a film set in the African jungle - the people in charge of Hyde Park Picture House arranged for an elephant to appear on the streets of Leeds.

Hundreds of people packed onto the corner of Brudenell Road and Queen's Road in Hyde Park to catch a glimpse of the giant animal.

The elephant, which was borrowed from the famous Billy Smart's Circus, was dressed up with a big drape to advertise the film.

"Before the circus came The Big Hunt," said the poster.

"See it now at the Hyde Park Cinema for 2 days."

The pictures show crowds of people tightly packed in to catch a glimpse of the elephant, with children standing just a few feet away behind a flimsy rope, while more photos were taken with people posing alongside the circus animal.

Thankfully, attitudes have now changed and Hyde Park Picture House hasn't used wild animals to advertise films for several decades.

The cinema is currently closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, putting its 106-year history under serious threat of permanent closure.

"The cinema is anticipating a period of significant financial difficulty over the coming months, during a key time in its history," a spokesperson said, after a response fund was set up in a bid to keep the cinema in existence.
