The time Alan Smith saw red for England on horrid night in last outing at St Mary's Stadium

These days it feels a little strange talking about Leeds United players and the England first team. Way back in 2002 though, one Elland Road favourite was flying the flag for the Whites on the international stage.

Alan Smith featured 19 times for his country, between 2001 and 2007. And while England prepare for their Euro 2020 qualifier in Southampton, we've dug out the match reports from the last time the Three Lions played at St Mary's Stadium.

The date was October 16, 2002, and England were bidding for a place in Euro 2004. The opponents - Macedonia. Easy.

It turned into a night to forget very quickly for the home team, and for keeper David Seaman. Arsenal's veteran stopper allowed the opponents to score from a corner in the opening stages.

What followed was a scrappy affair and a scramble to clinch a 2-2 draw on home soil with goals from David Beckham and Steven Gerrard. Smith will want to forget it too, as he saw red for a second bookage offence in the final moments of the game.

Steven Gerrard had even been stretchered off earlier to make it a horrid evening of football for Sven's men. The result left England in third place in group seven at that time, though they did of course go on to qualify for Portugal.
