The three Welsh gastropubs named in the UK's Top 50

Three Welsh gastropubs have been named among the very best in the UK.

Big 7 Travels has ranked its 'Top 50 Best Gastropubs in the UK' and restaurants from Monmouthshire, Swansea and Nantgaredig in Carmarthenshire have made the list.

The website produces city guides aimed towards adventurous travellers looking for authentic experiences, from where to eat and drink to the most unmissable things to do.

The Hardwick in Monmouthshire , run by owner and chef Stephen Terry, has come out on top in Wales being ranked 22nd on the list.

The website read: "One of the best restaurants in Wales, The Hardwick serves up a set Sunday lunch that has something for all tastes. Their sirloin of Johnny Morris Herefordshire beef comes beautifully pink with Yorkshire pudding and seasonal veggies.

"There’s also a pedigree pork shoulder with crackling and apple sauce or a deep fried Jerusalem artichoke options for the non-meat eaters. This is an essential place for a satisfying feast."

Y Polyn , in Nantgaredig, which serves a European menu serving local produce, has been ranked 31st.

The testimonial for the restaurant read: "The food here is what all good gastropubs should   be: you won’t find foams, gels and technical wizardry on the plate. What you will find is beautiful produce cooked simply and with respect.

"The husband and wife team pour pride and passion into every single bite.  Expect beautifully executed dishes such as rabbit rillettes, with sourdough toast and Bramley apple chutney."

Meanwhile, The Plough and Harrow in Murton, Gower , Swansea has entered the list for the first time at number 27.

The website read: "They’ve won countless awards including the best gastropub in Wales for 2018, so they clearly know the ins and outs of a good feed.

"It all comes down to the sourcing of the very best ingredients, good big honest portions and a focus on flavour above all else. The sort of place you won’t be able to leave without having a big smile on your face. It really is that good."

Chef/patron of the Plough and Harrow, Nick Jones, said: "It's one of our best accolades to date and really nice to get acknowledgement from further afield, outside of Wales in particular.

"We have worked hard for six years and there have been enough hard times to make these moments of reward so much more worth it. We said six years ago our dream was to give Gower and Swansea the best food pub its ever seen to now be competing on the national stage, we are so very proud and grateful."

Mr Jones added the support of the people of Murton, Bishopston and the surrounding areas was "integral" to its success.

Councillor for Bishopston , Lyndon Jones said: "I'm so pleased for the team at the Plough, they keep pushing themselves and winning award after award, they've help put Murton and Bishopston on the map nationally with their success and given the Gower a fantastic community pub with amazing food that I'm sure everyone living here is proud of."

Coming out on top on the list was The Broad Chare in Newcastle Upon Tyne, whilst The Pony & Trap in Chew Magna, Bristol, came second.
