The three ways Chelsea can line up if N'Golo Kante starts against Wolves

N'Golo Kante is expected to return to action for Chelsea this week having sat out the international break because of a niggly ankle injury.

With Chelsea set to play three games in eight days, the Frenchman's workload will need to be managed.

But considering Wolves' counterattacking strengths and the need for a second league win of the campaign, Frank Lampard may still be tempted to use him from the start at Molineux on Saturday.

If he starts who drops out? And will there be a change in formation? Here are the options that the head coach will be considering.

Ashley Cole: Mason Mount can be a top player

Kante on the left of a midfield three

Wolves focus much of their attacking down the right wing. With Emerson Palmieri likely absent due to a hamstring injury sustained while on international duty for Italy last weekend, his expected replacement, Marcos Alonso, will require plenty of assistance from whoever is stationed on the left of Chelsea's midfield.

For obvious reasons Kante is the best option but if not then Ross Barkley could end up playing in that role. His attacking instincts will need to be curbed and he may be forced into wider areas to provide Alonso with assistance up against Adama Traore.

It is worth bearing in mind, however, that prior to the break Lampard spoke about doing what is best for Kante and not rushing him back. Just because Wolves are especially strong in one area will not be enough of an excuse.

Kante in a holding role with Jorginho

Jorginho has been quietly impressive so far this season, meaning that he is unlikely to be replaced by Kante.

In the Super Cup defeat to Liverpool, Jorginho was stationed at the base of a midfield three with Kante on the right side of him and Barkley on the left.

But there is a strong argument for Lampard to alter his formation. He regularly used a 4-2-3-1 system at Derby County last season and that was how Chelsea started in the heavy defeat to Manchester United on the opening weekend of the season with Mateo Kovacic alongside the Italian.

In theory, the idea of Kante and Jorginho playing in a joint-holding role makes sense. They should work very well in tandem together: Kante breaking up play, Jorghino starting moves forward from deep.

Kante on the right

His job would be much the same as on the left and, as we have seen more than once so far this season, Cesar Azpilicueta has been targeted by opponents. Some additional support for the Chelsea captain would not go amiss.

Looking at Wolves’ strengths, it seems the least likely of these three options for Saturday but Kante did start there in that game against Liverpool and if it was to happen (also depending on Kovacic’s fitness), Barkley would likely operate on the left with a front three of Pulisic, Abraham and Mount.
