The three things Tottenham must improve on in order to leapfrog Chelsea in the top-four race

The race for a Champions League place is well and truly up for grabs following results over the past week.

With Tottenham nine points behind Chelsea in the table ahead of last Saturday's goalless draw at Watford, they are now only six behind them after the Blues picked up one point from their last two games.

Looking well out of it following Jose Mourinho's arrival in north London back in November as the team sat in the bottom half and trailing the top four by a huge 12 points, the Lilywhites may just do the unthinkable come May given no team is putting a consistent run together at present.

Spurs registered a much-needed win on Wednesday evening against Norwich City and Toby Alderweireld outlined the three things they must improve on if they are to jump back into the top four and seal a place in Europe's elite competition.

"Yeah, I think first of all, we have to look to our own performance," he said after the win over the Canaries. "We can't do anything about them of course, but I think we have to play better, be more clinical in front of goal, be more clinical in our game.

"But then of course yeah you look to all the results because you want to get into the top four and there is a chance. So first of all I think we have to improve."

The team have had to do without Harry Kane in recent weeks and he may only return for the final few games of the season as he's not due to be back in training until April.

With Spurs proving in the past that they can cope without their star player, the Belgian defender has called on his teammates to step up in the England captain's absence.

"I understand that. If you see his numbers they are unbelievable," he added. "It’s one plus one, you know?

"If you think to yourself: ‘Oh, he's not there!’ You miss those kind of goals. But in the last couple of seasons we’ve shown that of course we miss him.

"I'm not saying we're not missing him. But we have to deal with it. Some people need to step up and be important as well.

"I’m happy with the two goals [we scored against Norwich] because we didn't score against Liverpool and then Watford. So happy with the goals today."
