The three secret words to help Tesco shoppers find the cheapest food

Budget ranges are seeing a boom in supermarkets as shoppers seek out the cheapest products. But unlike some other stores' ranges, such as Asda's Smart Price and Morrisons' Savers, the cheapest items at Tesco aren't always that visible.

For a start, it doesn't have one overall budget range, but a number of budget brands. There are no plain white labels to look out for as Tesco's colourful brands blend in with the rest of its products.

It's pretty much been that way since the scrapping of its old 'Everyday Value' branding - and, while they may look more enticing, it can sometimes make the cheaper stuff trickier to find. But if you're shopping online, which more and more customers are choosing to do, there are some words you can search for to help you find the budget brands.

Shoppers can do a simple search to find Tesco's cheapest products (Manchester Family / MEN)

Simply type in 'Tesco value range' in the search tool and you'll find more than 100 of the retailer's budget products.

While it doesn't bring up every item, it shows dozens of items from its cheapest ranges, which include:

  • Hearty Food Co - pasta, sauces, pizza, fish, frozen chips, chicken burgers, lasagne and other ready meals
  • H. W. Nevill's - bread, wraps, pain au chocolat, croissants, scones
  • The Grower's Harvest - frozen and tinned fruit and veg, orange/apple juice, porridge oats, chopped tomatoes, sultanas
  • Stockwell & Co - tea bags, flour, jam, baked beans, gravy, rice pudding, tuna, mayonnaise, ketchup, cereal, squash
  • Ms Molly's - biscuits, cakes, chocolate, trifles, frozen desserts, ice cream
  • Butcher's Choice - lamb chops, chicken portions
  • Creamfields - cheeses, yoghurt
  • Eastman's - ham, cooked chicken, pork pies, pate, quiche
  • Nightingale Farms - tomatoes, peppers, celery
  • Suntrail Farms - grapes, plums, kiwis, oranges, lemons, fruit salad
  • Rosedene Farms - blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pears
  • Willow Farm - sliced cooked chicken, whole chicken
  • Woodside Farms - bacon, gammon, pork, sausages, chicken
  • Redmere Farms - garlic, mushrooms, beans, asparagus, potatoes, courgettes, onions
  • Bay Fishmongers - frozen prawns

The list above is not extensive, but gives an idea of the extent of Tesco's budget products. The retailer says it has 'significantly increased' the number of lines where it offers 'great every day value' from 400 in 2019 to more than 2,000 today.

Other ways shoppers can easily find its low cost items are by searching for Aldi Price Match, to find the products where prices have been matched with the budget retailer, or by checking the Clubcard deals. Customers can also search for an individual product and then choose the option to 'sort by: Price Low to High' to find the cheapest available.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re committed to giving our customers everyday great value through the expansion of our Aldi price match scheme to around 650 products, the re-launch of Everyday Low Prices to more than 1,600 items and the extension of Clubcard prices to all our Express stores."
