The three players Mikel Arteta must target in January window to secure Arsenal European football

With the January transfer window approaching, Arsenal's recruitment team will be scouring the market for solutions to the club's current problems.

The Gunners were Europe's highest spenders in the summer window, signing six players for a total of £150million as they looked to strengthen across the pitch from goalkeeper to defence and midfield.

Whilst it's unlikely that there will be another huge outlay spent in January, there are still key positions where Arsenal are expected to look at with the African Cup of Nations also taking place in the New Year.

football.london takes a look at three players who manager Mikel Arteta should be targeting alongside technical director Edu in January.

Dusan Vlahovic

Vlahovic has scored 28 goals in 38 Serie A games with Fiorentina in 2021 - and counting.

The Serbian centre forward has informed the Fiorentina board that he has no intention of extending his current contract with the club, which expires in 2023.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Vlahovic but a move at this stage seems unlikely, with his representatives keen to push him into a club competing in elite European competition.

Renato Sanches

The 24-year-old midfielder has previously been linked with Arsenal in the past.

Having won the French championship with Lille, it's expected that Sanches will seek a new challenge either in January or the summer.

"Maybe Milan and Arsenal are interested but I don't know," Sanches said.

"Milan are a big and historic club. It's class, I like them.

"I spoke with my agent, I know which clubs are calling and which are not, but I can't tell now. But I know I'm ready. If an offer comes in, I'll find out what's best for me."

Sanches had a difficult spell for Bayern Munich a couple of seasons ago and was previously on loan at Swansea in 2019.

Lautaro Martinez

Arsenal were keen on signing Inter Milan striker Martinez during the summer transfer window.

They are expected to revive their interest in the upcoming windows, although competition from north London rivals Tottenham is likely.

Martinez previously worked with Spurs boss Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.
