The three players Arsenal must target in January transfer window to save Champions League hopes

The January transfer window doesn't open for another seven weeks, but rumours are beginning to heat up.

Arsenal were extremely busy in the summer, signing no less than six players which included smashing their transfer record to lure Nicolas Pepe to the Emirates Stadium for £72m from Lille.

However, problems still exist within Unai Emery's squad.

So much so that the Spanish head coach doesn't appear to know what his strongest team is at the moment and that's reflected in a number of poor performances so far this season.

Luckily for him, the winter window does provide a chance to address those problems in order to save the club's fading Champions League qualification hopes.

We at football.london have taken a look at where the Gunners must strengthen and who would be good signings in the January transfer window.

Centre-back - Dayot Upamecano

Despite signing David Luiz in the summer coupled with Rob Holding's return to fitness, there has been little in terms of defensive improvements this season.

As a result, Emery should be looking at adding a commanding centre-back to his ranks in January.

Luckily there's one name that keeps popping up.

Prior to signing Luiz, Dayot Upamecano was being heavily linked with a move to the Emirates. In fact there was talk of a swap deal involving Emile Smith Rowe, but in the end Arsenal had a bid - thought to be in the region of £50million - rejected by RB Leipzig.

According to L'Equipe - via the Sun - Upamecano's release clause will be slashed to £53million if he does not sign a new deal before the end of this season.

Some Arsenal fans got excited at the potential arrival of the Frenchman in 2020 following Raul Sanllehi's interesting reaction following the Europa League win over Vitoria last month.

Midfield -  Thomas Partey

Granit Xhaka looks certain to leave in January. He's just been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and his relationship with some of the supporters appears to be broken beyond repair.

The general feeling amongst the majority of fans was that Xhaka needed to be replaced in order for the Gunners to reach the next level, so this can be fast-tracked.

Amid links to Newcastle United, AC Milan as well as a return to Germany, should the midfielder leave then the north London outfit would certainly need to bring in a replacement.

Preferably of a similar profile to Xhaka who can help Arsenal to control games and one who can give the side some physical presence.

Thomas Partey was linked with a move to the Gunners in the summer and his agent has said "there’s a €50m (£43.5m) release clause in his contract" with Atletico Madrid.

6'0 and an effective defensive shield, the Ghana international definitely ticks all the boxes, but Arsenal will have to move fast as Atletico are reportedly in talks to increase his release clause fee.

Winger - Wilfried Zaha

On paper the attacking trio of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe looks to be one of the most impressive across the Premier League and possibly Europe.

But there are some big issues. One being that is that this requires pushing their top scorer out wide, the other being that Pepe is yet to hit top form following his £72m summer transfer.

And more importantly, Emery doesn't seem to know how to get all three in the same team and keeping a nice balance.

For a more balanced front three, the Gunners should look to bring in a natural winger which also allows Aubameyang to move into his more favoured central position.

There's plenty of wide players who will be linked, but Arsenal should look no further than Wilfried Zaha.

Heavily tipped for a move in the summer prior to Pepe's arrival, Zaha showed the Gunners what they missed out on during Crystal Palace's draw at the Emirates last month and also combined to great affect with Pepe during the last international break.
