The three counties where Covid-19 is out of control as infections in Ireland top 27k in just two weeks

Monaghan, Louth and Limerick are Ireland's worst counties when it comes to the spread of Covid-19 over the last fortnight.

On Monday, the Department of Health reported 6,110 new cases of coronavirus, as politicians bite their nails amid an explosion in case numbers.

In the last two weeks alone we've seen a bone-chilling 27,754 cases recorded by public health officials, as the chickens come home to roost after a festive reopening.

From being the best country in Europe six weeks ago, Ireland has essentially dropped off the edge of a cliff.

Dramatically, we're now at the stage where the Chief Medical Officer says people in Ireland are more likely to have Covid-19 than the flu.

Dr Tony Holohan yesterday said that anyone with flu-like symptoms should self-isolate as it is "unlikely to be anything other than Covid".

The grim message came as the number of infections recorded since the pandemic began hit 107,997.

Dr Holohan told a press briefing: "If you have symptoms that are flu-like symptoms now, you might as well accept this is Covid. The positivity rate is approaching 25%.

"If you have these symptoms it's unlikely to be anything other than Covid at this point in time."

As coronavirus runs riot across the country, here's the latest figures on 14-day incidence rates across the counties:
