The test: mixing bowls

Mason Cash Original, £13.99, Lakeland, An oldie but a goodie. It’s roomy, with a 4.3-litre capacity, and the ridges of the familiar pattern make it tactile and easy to get a purchase on. It’s also the perfect size and shape to cradle in the old-fashioned way, for a spot of hand whisking.

Hairy Bikers, £25, John Lewis Turns out that their cookware is surprisingly pretty, with it’s cobalt blue and earthy cream glaze. It’s also enormous – 5 litres – and weighs a tonne. One to use on the sideboard, unless you’re particularly ripped.

Le Creuset, £21 lecreuset.co.uk This one’s a little more petite, holding 2L, but its high sides, spout and handle, make it perfect for rustling up batters. It’s also oven proof. Photograph: Frank Baron/guardian.co.uk
