The teen son of controversial political couple Simon and Karen Danczuk is standing for election in Rochdale

The teenage son of Simon and Karen Danczuk is hoping to follow in his parents' footsteps by entering politics.

Milton Danczuk, 13, is standing for election as the member of youth parliament for Rochdale.

His dad was the town's high-profile and often controversial Labour MP from 2010 to 2017 while his mum was a local Labour Party councillor and social media celeb.

Milton, a Kingsway Park High School pupil, is on a shortlist of seven candidates up for election.

He said: "I’ve always taken a keen interest in politics and believe I can make a positive difference for young people in our town by representing their views well.

"I know from speaking with lots of my friends, school colleagues, and in the wider community, that because of the pandemic there is a lot more to be done for young people.

"We really need to ensure younger people are listened to so that they can help shape policies that affect them.

"Having grown up around politics I’ve learnt how important democracy is and how it’s crucial that people, particularly young people, have a voice."

Mr Danczuk said: "I’m delighted that Milton has taken an interest in politics and is standing for this very important position.

"I wish him all the very best in his campaign and obviously encourage as many Rochdale young people to vote for him as possible!”

The voting will take place for four weeks from January 17 with the results announced on February 14 at Middleton Arena.

Mr Danczuk was one of the UK's most high-profile backbench MPs during his time in Parliament.

He was a vocal critic of the Labour Party leadership, particularly Jeremy Corbyn, and also a prominent child sex abuse campaigner, helping to expose the crimes of Cyril Smith, one of his predecessors as Rochdale MP.

In December 2015 he was suspended from the Labour Party after exchanging explicit messages with a 17-year-old girl, which he later described as 'inappropriate and stupid'.

Ms Danczuk stood as a councillor in Kingsway between 2011 and 2015. She was dubbed the 'Selfie Queen' after posting dozens of revealing pictures of herself on Twitter.

After stepping down from politics she was a contestant on reality show Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls and made several appearances on ITV chat show Loose Women.

The couple separated in 2015.
