The teams Liverpool can play in the Champions League 2019/20 group stage - and those they can't

Liverpool's victory over Tottenham Hotspur didn't just earn them a sixth European Cup.

It also gave them the opportunity of an easier route through the group stages in next season's Champions League.

By beating the Londoners 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday evening, Jurgen Klopp's side are top seeds for the draw, which takes place in Monaco on August 29.

There are 32 teams in the group stage. Of those, 26 have already qualified with the remaining six earning their place through the qualification rounds, which begin next month.

For the group stage draw, the teams are split into four pots of eight teams, with one team taken from each pot.

Pot One consists of the Champions League holders, the Europa League holders, and the champions of the leading European leagues, based on UEFA's league coefficient, which is calculated over performances in Europe over the past five years.

The remaining three groups are split based on a club's UEFA coefficient.

Liverpool's victory parade from the eyes of the players

It's why last season Liverpool were in Pot Three and handed a difficult group containing Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.

Pot One's teams have already been decided, with Liverpool alongside Europa League winners Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Zenit St Petersburg.

Klopp's side cannot play any of those teams.

Nor can they be drawn against Tottenham, who are guaranteed to be in Pot Two, as teams from the same country are kept apart at this stage of the competition.

While Pots Two, Three and Four will only be confirmed once the qualifiers are finished, there are certain teams whose placing is secured.

In Pot Two, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk will definitely join Tottenham, while Porto and Ajax will also be in Pot Two if they negotiate their qualifiers.

Pot Three includes Benfica, Lyon, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Salzburg, Valencia and Inter Milan, with Dinamo Kiev and Celtic provisionally included on the basis they win through the qualifying round.

And in Pot Four, Lokomotiv Moscow, Genk, Galatasaray, RB Leipzig, Atalanta and Lille are in, with FC Copenhagen and Dinamo Zagreb looking to join them.

Should any of the six expected qualifiers fail to make it to the group stage, teams could move up a pot - for example, if Ajax or Porto miss out, Benfica will move up to Pot Two - but many of the teams are unlikely to shift places.

It means Liverpool's Champions League final win means they could end up in a group with Porto, Salzburg and Genk.

However, they could easily be drawn alongside Real Madrid, Lyon and RB Leipzig.

The final three pots will be confirmed when the final qualifiers are played on August 28.

Liverpool, though, are top seeds regardless - and will hope the benefits of their win at Estadio Metropolitano extend into the next Champions League campaign.
