The teams Liverpool can definitely play in the Champions League group stage

Liverpool's defence of their Champions League title gets underway in September.

The Reds go straight into the group stage as top seeds having triumphed 2-0 over Tottenham in Madrid in May.

That rules out any meetings with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain or Zenit St Petersburg, who are all in pot one.

But the Reds can face some big names who are currently in pot 2 and beyond, while other sides continue to battle for qualification to the group stage.

Liverpool cannot face any other English side in the group stage.

Here are the sides who, at this time of writing, Liverpool could definitely face in the Champions League group stage:

Pot 2

Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid

Dortmund

Napoli

Shakhtar Donestsk

Benfica

Ajax will be in pot two if they defeat APOEL in the qualifying round.

Pot 3

Lyon

Leverkusen

Salzburg

Valencia

Inter Milan

Club Brugges, Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb will be in pot three if they progress in the qualifying round.

Pot 4

Lokomotiv Moscow

Genk

Galatasaray

RB Leipzig

Atalanta

Lille

Slavia Prague, Young Boys, Red Star, APOEL, Rosenburg, Krasnodar and CFR Cluj could enter pot four should they progress in the final qualifying round.

In the event a number of these teams make it through, then clubs such as Lokomotiv Moscow or Young Boys could enter Pot 3.
