The teams Cardiff City and Swansea City will have to beat to get promoted next season

Cardiff City's relegation from the Premier League means they will be competing in the Championship next season with Swansea City.

The last time they were in same division - during the 2013-14 campaign - it was at the top table of British football, with both sides winning their respective home games.

Now both back in the second tier, it means we have the South Wales derby to look forward to - When Cardiff City and Swansea City supporters will discover the South Wales derby dates .

With the Championship season now over (bar the play-offs) and the Premier League relegation picture sorted, we now know the majority of the teams the Bluebirds and Swans will have to beat to return to the top flight.

One of Leeds United, Aston Villa, West Brom and Derby will be in the top tier, along with Norwich City and Sheffield United.

Luton Town and Barnsley have earned promotion from League One - and there’s still one more spot up for grabs in the play-offs, with Charlton, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Doncaster in contention.

The contenders

Cardiff and Fulham will be looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt (Gareth Everett/Huw Evans Agency)

The three relegated sides - Cardiff , Fulham and Huddersfield - have to be considered as potential promotion candidates from the offset, mainly because their coffers will have been significantly boosted by a campaign in the Premier League and their parachute payments due. The Bluebirds and Terriers are likely to keep the nucleus of their squad together, but the Cottagers could see their side broken up as other teams look to pick off their star men.

One could point to the examples of Swansea and Stoke City , who were relegated last season and, while tipped for promotion, struggled to put together a convincing promotion push.

The Swans have improved markedly under Graham Potter but with another summer of upheaval on the horizon and player departures expected - Graham Potter on Leeds United target Daniel James' future and what the summer transfer window holds for Swansea City - promotion may be a step too far for Potter's inexperienced squad. Regardless though, they have shown that a play-off push is within their grasp.

Swansea v Blackburn Post Match Review

The big-spending Potters endured a nightmare campaign and will have to seriously improve to get anywhere near the top six next term. Nathan Jones has a huge job on his hands at the bet365 Stadium, but he does have quality players at his disposal in the shape of Joe Allen and Jack Butland.

Middlesbrough have seriously stalled under Tony Pulis, remarkably scoring fewer goals than relegated side Rotherham this term. The Teessiders fell away badly, and serious questions will now be asked of Pulis. The fans appear to have turned, but with a change of manager, Boro could be a force to be reckoned with.

Elsewhere, Bristol City are always there or thereabouts, agonisingly missing out on a play-off spot to the Rams this season. Gary Johnson has worked wonders at Ashton Gate and the Robins will be in the conversation come the business end of the 2019-20 campaign. Nottingham Forest , who like Stoke have spent money, will hope for a return to the glory days and some stability under Martin O'Neill.

And as previously stated, the play-off contenders (minus the victorious party) will all be strong challengers for the promotion spots.

The Swansea City player ratings as duo impress but chant sums up another man's contribution at Blackburn
