The Teacher final episode sees Newcastle at centre of sinister twist as Channel 5 drama ends

*THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Newcastle was at the centre of a sinister twist in the final episode of gripping Channel 5 thriller The Teacher as viewers were left on tenterhooks as how it was all going to pan out.

Since it started on Monday, the four parter about a school teacher accused of sexual activity with a pupil, has become a hot topic on Twitter as viewers have shared their theories on who was out to get Jenna, the teacher played by Sheridan Smith, whose career was left in tatters, with her facing persecution from her colleagues and pleading guilty to the charges against her.

Episode 3 of The Teacher dropped one hell of a bombshell when a man who had got close to Pauline, one of Jenna’s closest confidantes at school, suddenly came into a frame as Arnold Cleary, a teacher she worked with at a different school with a serious grudge to bear.

Add to that the fact that the mum of Kyle, the boy at the centre of Jenna’s conviction, found a phone in his possession with messages about Jenna and telling him “you can do it big man.”

The twists and turns of the first three parts set things up nicely for Thursday’s final episode, which to many viewers surprise, kicked off in Newcastle, with shots of the Tyne Bridge, Millennium Bridge and Quayside as Jenna headed to a school gym to speak to one of her former pupils.

Then, after more searching online, she discovered that former colleague, Newcastle based teacher Arnold had been arrested for having a relationship with one of his pupils, after Jenna raised concerns.

Arnold, under the new alias of Brian, had come into her life to exact the most evil kind of revenge by trying to ruin everything for her.

When the two finally came face to face, he tried to convince Jenna she was as bad as him, even goading her about her late mum's battle with bipolar.

And a gripping final scene saw Arnold step out in front of a speeding car to end his own life as Jenna looked on in horror.

Given that The Teacher actor Kelvin Fletcher let slip earlier this week that the drama, while predominantly set in Bradford, was actually filmed in Budapest, there’s a good change the Newcastle scene setters were actually just random landscape shots and the gym wasn’t actually in Tyneside.

Talking about filming in Budapest, during an interview on This Morning former Strictly winner Kelvin, who plays Jack, said: "It was a really great job and we filmed that in Budapest as well of all places."

Quick to react host, Alison Hammond asked: "Yeah, why did they film it there?!" to which Kelvin replied: "I'm not too sure.

"I don't know if it was a budget thing or, I think visually it sells as Budapest, errr as Bradford.

"It was a great experience for us. Sadly there was a big lockdown when we was over there, so we couldn't the sights and sounds of Budapest."
