The tactical modification made by Bruce and his coaches which is paying dividends for Newcastle

Newcastle United players were accused of only knowing how to play one way earlier this season - the Rafa Benitez way.

One supporter speaking on a vox pop via Youtube on Saturday night stated that Steve Bruce was merely using the Benitez play book in order to achieve better results.

It would be churlish to make such a comment in fairness, with Bruce and his coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence slowly getting their message across to the Toon players this season.

In the last two matches, United have netted four goals from set-pieces that were worked on at Benton during the week and Bruce has also modified the system used by Benitez.

Both DeAndre Yedlin and Jetro Willems made big contributions in the 2-1 win against the Cherries.

After the game Bruce said: "We have been trying to get our wing-backs further up the pitch to join in because when you play this system (five-man defence) you can be a little bit short at the top end.

"It was great for DeAndre to get up there.

"It was just what we needed at the right time."

Bruce is also trying to squeeze more out of his centre-backs in terms of goals and with Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles all weighing in with goals he is getting somewhere.

He added: "It's important when you play three of them how important set-pieces are.

"For all their good play in the first 20 minutes today, Bournemouth scored from a set-piece and a well-worked one at that, so sometimes you have to hold your hands up.

"As we have seen many times now, set-pieces are a big part of it, especially when we've got three centre-backs on the pitch. That gives you a little bit of an advantage."
