The tactical change which could secure Newcastle United the points againt Crystal Palace - according to John Carver

Former Newcastle United manager John Carver believes Steve Bruce may change the set-up for today’s game against Crystal Palace.

With Newcastle struggling for goals, and Saturday's game against a side just one point below them, Carver believes a change in a formation may need to come to ensure the Magpies don't lose the game.

Bruce confirmed that Dwight Gayle is fit and ready to face his former side, while Joelinton needs a late fitness test to see whether he will play a part at Selhurst Park.

Carver, who worked under several managers at St James' Park before taking the reins himself in 2015, previewed the game on BBC 5 Live.

He said: “Steve is going to have to look at this as a game where we can get three points.

“We might have to go two strikers - he might play 3-5-2.

“I’m not sure who he will put in there, probably Dwight Gayle - he’s going back to his old club, when players do that they end up doing something special.

“He might be a little bit more expansive.

“Danny Rose has come in - he’s an expansive full-back. Valentino Lazaro on the right - he’s an expansive full-back, and they actually did quite well in the first half and we actually looked quite offensive in the first half but for some reason we just dropped off.

“We have to change our mindset against Crystal Palace.

“They’re around us and we can’t afford to lose it. We’ve got a decent record there, so that’s got to be a big plus.”
