The TAC’s Split Second Competition Is Back With $5k Cash & More Up For Grabs

It’s time to buckle up, because the TAC is back with its annual Split Second Film Competition — and once again, they’re asking you to get creative about road safety.

This comp offers any Victorian Steven Spielberg counterparts the opportunity to win $5k cash and a whopping $45,000 production budget to help bring their visions to life and into the VIC TVC hall of fame.

Is this starting your engine? Well, slow down and don’t get ahead of yourself, silly.

Let’s take a short detour while I roll out all the deets for you.

The TAC, AKA the Transport Accident Commission, was founded in 1987 with a mission to promote road safety and help people injured in road trauma get their lives back on track.

Not only has this legislation helped thousands of Victorians, but it has also gifted us with a series of legendary commissioned TV ads that have graced our screens for decades.

There’s no doubt that you’ve quoted the iconic tagline, “If you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot”, or cringed at the sight of a pair of vans after their 2022 motorbike campaign

Solidifying themselves and their important message in Aussie pop culture, the TAC established the Split Second Competition. In a nutshell, it’s an annual contest that calls on everyday Victorians to tell their own story about road safety in a peer-to-peer way.

The annual short film comp offers two Victorian visionaries aged 18 to 30 a $5000 cash prize, as well as a $45k budget to bring their idea to life (with access to your very own production crew, BTW).

The TAC wants you to get creative and reimagine road safety in a way nobody but you could think of. Take last year’s winners, Rhys Delios Callanan and Olivia Hartanto, for example.

Rhys’ ad, ‘Fashionably Late’, took an out-of-the-box perspective on the theme of ‘driving tired’, campaigning the idea of arriving late as ‘cool’ (and set it in the Victorian era, mind you).

Just as clever, Olivia created a satirical cartoon titled ‘Captain Buckle’, a superhero who stresses the importance of wearing a seatbelt in every situation (even when committing other crimes).

So basically what I’m saying is: if the inner machinations of your mind are an enigma, and you’ve got the writing goods to back it up, keep reading.

Let’s dive right into this year’s road safety themes. You’ll want to focus your TVC script on either seatbelt usage or speeding.

To enter, our automotive Martin Scorsese fiends (AKA you) need to pitch an idea based on one of these themes, bringing your own unique perspective on how to communicate these messages in a memorable and impactful way.

After writing a script worthy of an Oscar, simply submit it to their website portal under the appropriate theme, and voilà! Easy as being a law-abiding citizen who obeys the road rules.

Think you’d slay both? I’m not stopping you, Greta Gerwigsubmit one for each theme!

The more chances to win $5k and the help of a profesh production crew, the better I say.

So go forth, my little film nerds, and get to creatin’!
