The T Rex is cleaned as the Hancock Museum gets ready to open in September

A photographer captured one of the more unusual and delicate cleaning jobs you'll see in 2020.

While bars, restaurants and shops are thoroughly and regularly scrubbed to make them Covid-safe, the same goes for museums too. But with some exhibits, a light touch is needed.

Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys visited Great North Museum: Hancock, on the Newcastle University campus, as its staff prepared to reopen it to visitors.

There, he met Dan Baker, 43, as he cleaned the natural history museum's exhibits, including the ever-popular model T-Rex skeleton and replica elephant. A masked and gloved Dan is seen carefully dusting and vacuuming the dinosaur and elephant, ahead of the Hancock opening its doors again on Tuesday, September 1 for the first time since March.

Caroline McDonald, executive manager at the museum, said: "Visitors bring the museum to life and we're very excited to be welcoming back our community after so long.

"It may feel different at first, but we are still bursting with stories to be discovered and curious corners to explore."

Free tickets to visit the Hancock are available to book now from its website.

The Hancock is hosting two special temporary exhibitions - Other Worlds and Ancient Iraq - which have been granted extensions to give visitors a chance to catch them, as they only opened shortly before the lockdown.

Some galleries and interactive displays will remain closed until further notice.

Safety measures include one-way routes, extra cleaning and reduced capacity to aid social distancing.
