There it is, Sydney fam: NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is reportedly expected to announce that the lockdown is being extended for an extra week after more than 330 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 have been recorded since mid-June.
The lockdown was set to end at midnight this Friday, but with the super infectious Delta COVID-19 strain still spreading, lockdown ending seemed unlikely and ABC has confirmed that the rumours are, indeed, true.
The NSW government’s Crisis Cabinet Committee put their foot down on the matter yesterday after sitting through “extensive meetings” to determine what was best for the state amid the latest COVID crisis.
Apparently Gladys will make the announcement of the NSW lockdown extension at 11:00am today. It is the second time the stay-at-home orders have been lengthened.
The Premier is also reportedly set to announce new NSW lockdown restrictions for students and teachers as school holidays end next week. From next Tuesday, classes will be online for schools and students in Greater Sydney for four days.
So to recap: NSW folks must stay indoors until 11:59pm next Friday, unless you need to leave the home for essentials reasons such as shopping, exercise or for medical reasons including to receive their COVID-19 vaccine shot.
Lockdown first kicked off 12 days ago, with the state government rolling out stay-at-home orders for central Sydney, before broadening it to include the entire metropolitan area, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong, and Shellharbour.
