The Switch is now Nintendo’s best-selling home console of all time

Nintendo has a bonafide hit on its hands because the Switch has sold more than 103 million units as of Dec. 31 2021, officially eclipsing the Wii’s lifetime sales of 101.63 million to become the company’s biggest home console.

These numbers come from Nintendo’s most recent earnings report, putting the total shipped consoles at approximately 103.54 million. On the software side of things, the company also states that it’s sold 766.41 million games. That’s a lot of systems and a boatload more games, folks.

The number isn’t surprising since the Nintendo Switch has been an incredibly popular system since it first released nearly five years ago and regularly tops hardware charts. Sales have also been maintained well by a strong library of games and the fact that there are three Switch models on sale at any given time: the base model, the handheld-only Switch Lite, and the latest OLED model.

Part of the reason why sales have ticked up so much of late is that the system saw a significant rise in attention and sales as people stayed in and connected online in the pandemic, especially playing titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. That game has now become the Switch’s second best-selling game of all time at 37.62 million copies sold, despite only being on sale for less than two years.

The Switch’s impressive sales milestone only places it behind Nintendo’s two most popular handhelds, the Game Boy and the DS. These systems are sitting at 118.69 and 154.2 million units sold, respectively. While chip shortages have forced the company to revise sales projections for their powerhouse console, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo’s latest is one of their greatest.
