The Swansea City transfer that's been put on hold due to coronavirus

Jefferson Montero’s move to Ecuadorian side Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Montero is currently still on loan at Birmingham City, but has so far managed just 568 minutes of first-team action, and he looks likely to be on the move this summer.

Reports last month suggested he was on the verge of completing a move back to Ecuador, with Liga de Quito believed to be closing in on agreeing a free transfer.

A two-year deal was mooted, but it now seems that the move has not progressed, with Quito boss Esteban Paz revealing that the ongoing uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed negotiations.

“We have not spoken with Jefferson Montero since February," he said.

“Everything is truncated by that issue (coronavirus). It put a brake on us.”

Montero was loaned out at the start of the season after head coach Steve Cooper made it clear that the winger would not be part of his plans going forward.

The EFL has announced this week that the season has now been further suspended until April 30, meaning Montero could yet turn out for Birmingham again before his contract with Swansea expires in June.
