The Swansea City headlines you can expect to see in 2022 as familiar issue awaits around the corner

The year is almost up for Swansea City.

After seeing another play-off charge ultimately end in disappointment, this time at Wembley, Steve Cooper departed, and was replaced by Russell Martin.

There have been some promising signs under the new boss, but there's a real sense that this is a team in transition.

Nevertheless, there are also members of the Jack Army who may well feel the new year will be bring another 12 months of progress.

Here, we take a look at the things you can expect to hear about in 2022...

A busy January? Or not...

In the wake of the Welsh Government's decision to put games behind closed doors, Martin said he'd hoped for a reasonably busy January window.

Martin is certainly keen on strengthening his squad, although any new arrivals will almost certainly be bankrolled by a sale or two, regardless of any knock-on effect of Covid.

The Swans boss admits the financial impact of playing games behind closed doors could well have an impact on their financial muscle in the upcoming window, but there's clearly still hope of getting some new faces on board.

James McAtee is a player they like, although there's clearly still a lot of work to be done before a move can be completed.

Sources at the Etihad had previously stressed that Manchester City had shown little interest in loaning out the youngster, believing his development would benefit from staying under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola.

At a time when squads are likely to be pushed to the limit due to Covid-related absences, such reluctance could well be strengthened over the coming weeks.

Andy Fisher is another player on the radar, while several others have also been linked, and Steven Benda would be the most obvious departure should that happen.

Morgan Whittaker is likely to be loaned out, while Yan Dhanda and Jay Fulton are also among those who could also be shifted.

More talk of style

Martin's possession-based football has already got people talking, and that's unlikely to change in the new year.

At the time of writing, the Swans remain at the top of the tree of possession and passing stats and, no matter what happens in terms of results, it will continue to be a big talking point.

Martin himself, and one suspects many fans too, will hope that conversations around his attractive brand of football will be against the backdrop of a strong run of results, but even if things aren't going to plan, his thinking is likely to be dissected by many a Quest highlights show over the coming months.

The recent heavy defeat will have stung for fans, many of whom were critical of the style implemented by Cooper, and yet his Nottingham Forest side tore the Swans apart.

It was perhaps the first time Martin's methods have been questioned by the fans, although it's worth stressing that he seems to still have the support of an overwhelming majority of the fanbase.

Even so, the debate over whether this Swans side is style over substance is likely to rage on.

Piroe speculation

Do Swans have enough for the top six?

At this stage, you'd probably say no.

But if they do, Joel Piroe is likely to be a big part of it.

Despite some initial naysayers, the Dutchman has taken to Championship football brilliantly, netting 11 goals for the Swans so far this season, establishing himself as a firm fans' favourites.

His showings have been so good that it's perhaps a surprise that his name hasn't been more widely discussed as a potential transfer target.

Murmurs of potential interest from Leicester City have bubbled to the surface in recent weeks, although the player himself doesn't seem aware of any admiration from the Foxes.

Piroe, as with any player, wants to test himself at the highest level, and if he ends the season with 20-plus goals, he is bound to be the subject of further interest at the end of the season.

Another rebuild?

Will this be a long overdue 'boring' summer? It would certainly be a welcome change of scenery.

Since their relegation from the Premier League, Swansea have endured more or less annual upheaval.

Whether it's having to replace their manager, or having to rebuild the first-team squad, there has frequently been a neverending to-do list for the Swans hierarchy, and their efforts to meet those challenges have, at times, been a little mixed.

Unlike last season, there aren't nearly as many players out of contract or here on loan, although losing wing-back Ethan Laird would certainly be considered a blow.

That means, one would hope, the foundations for Martin's side and his philosophy should survive until the summer.

Martin himself could well catch the eye of suitors elsewhere, of course, although he seems fully focused on the project in south Wales.

For the time being, anyway.
