The surprising stat that shows Jorginho's role in easing the N'Golo Kante problem for Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has had a mixed start to his career at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian arrived at the club shortly after the appointment of former manager Maurizio Sarri in the summer of 2018, following the head coach from Serie A club Napoli.

The duo never really won over fans due to inconsistency, despite the success on the pitch. Chelsea finished the 2018/19 season in third place, and won the Europa League by beating Arsenal in the final in what turned out to be Sarri's final game in charge, before he left in order to take up the role at Juventus.

Coming on as a substitute in the Europa League in February, Jorginho was jeered onto the pitch by some sections of supporters. The midfielder was linked with another reunion with Sarri at Juvenutus, but the arrival of Frank Lampard has given the 27-year-old a fresh start at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder has started all four games under the new Chelsea boss, scoring a penalty in the 2-2 Super Cup draw with Liverpool in just the second game of the season.

Jorginho has recorded seven tackles and seven interceptions over the 234 minutes he has played in the Premier League so far this campaign, the total of 14 is the best return of any midfielder in the traditional 'big 6' Premier League teams, with Arsenal's Matteo Guendouzi in second on 13.

Jorginho as shown his passing ability in spells during this season's games, so the stats are perhaps a surprise, especially as he usually plays alongside the more defensive minded N'Golo Kante, who, should he remain fit, is expected towards the top of the defensive statistics again this season.

However, with Kante currently struggling for fitness, the fact that his teammate is showing that he can also do the dirty side of the game is an encouraging sign for Chelsea fans.
