The surprising punishment you could get for driving too slow

We all know that driving over the speed limit can land you with points and a fine, or a fine and a long speed-awareness seminar.

But, can you get fined for driving too slow?

Research by Vanarama says that you can in fact face quite a hefty fine and/or points for this.

Despite there being no specific penalties for driving below the speed limit in the Highway Code, there are penalties for dangerous driving, and careless and inconsiderate driving, which slow driving could be perceived as in extreme circumstances.

If the person's slow driving was considered a 'dangerous driving' offence, the maximum penalty would be two years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or obligatory disqualification.

The penalty points here could range between three to 11 points if not disqualified.

If the speed, however slow, fell under a 'careless and inconsiderate driving' offence, the driver could be landed an unlimited fine, or a discretionary disqualification. This could see penalty points between three to nine also given.

However, you must also take care if you are behind a slow driver.

According to the Highway Code, motorists should not undertake other drivers who are driving slowly on the motorway by using the inside lane.

Undertaking recklessly could see you hit with three penalty points and a £100 fine either for careless driving, or driving without due care and attention.
