Anthony Martial sets post-Sir Alex Ferguson record in Man Utd win

Anthony Martial became the first Manchester United player to score a Premier League hat-trick since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in his side's 3-0 victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side boosted their chances of a top four finish with the impressive win against the Blades, and they had Martial to thank after the Frenchman's treble saw United move into fifth spot and just two points behind Chelsea having played a game more.

And Martial will be the answer to many a pub question in the future after he became the first Red Devils player to score a treble in the league since Robin van Persie's three goals against Aston Villa in 2013.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic did manage a hat-trick in the Europa League against St Etienne in 2017, but other than that no player has managed what Martial achieved.

Speaking after the game Solskjaer expressed his delight with Martial's performance, and revealed he has been working closely with the player in training to improve his finishing.

Solskjaer told Sky Sports: "I'm very happy for him, the first two he's in the box ready for crosses.

"We have worked a lot with Anthony on his movement in there and to be patient in there because he's a quality player who can drop out of the box and get some touches.

"But that's where you score the goals, and the last one of course was very nice combination play and a great finish.

"We work with the boys on finishing all the time. We could have scored more today, so we don't want to miss chances where we could score and Anthony was very efficient."

United are next in action on Saturday when they take on Norwich in the FA Cup quarter-final before returning to Premier League duties against Brighton on Tuesday.
