The surprising claim about former Nottingham Forest No.2 Roy Keane and Manchester United

Former Nottingham Forest assistant Roy Keane would do a “better job” as Manchester United manager than current incumbent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Irishman quit his post with the Reds little more than a week ago, and it is understood he is keen on a return to management.

Leeds United and Republic of Ireland legend Johnny Giles says Keane would be a hit if he returned to Old Trafford and would have more chance of getting the club back on track than his ex-teammate.

“I’d put my money on him at Manchester United before Solskjaer,” Giles said of Keane, on The Stand podcast.

“When you look at the summer, in Solskjaer’s case, it’s all about the backroom staff, he’s not mentioned in it. He should be picking the backroom staff, he should be picking the players.

“He should be dominant at the moment to get this thing right for next season.

“There's still a lot of talk. Is Rio Ferdinand going to come in now as a director of coaching or director of football? There's all that stuff going on at Manchester United at the moment. And Solskjaer hasn’t been mentioned.

“I honestly think if Roy Keane went to Manchester United now he would do a better job than Solskjaer with what’s needed now. They might need that type of thing."

Keane had been No.2 to Martin O’Neill – who was axed last week - at the City Ground, with the pair having also worked together for the Irish national team.

The 47-year-old has previously been in charge at Sunderland and Ipswich Town.
