The surprise role Sven Mislintat could play as Arsenal look for William Saliba's perfect partner

Arsenal's defensive frailties were exposed once again during the 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon.

It all started well for the Gunners as Alexandre Lacazette fired them ahead with a sensational strike from outside the area.

However, there was barely enough time to revel in the lead as Sead Kolasinac's error allowed Son Heung-min to equalise before Toby Alderweireld took advantage of some poor marking at a corner to head home the winner in the second half.

Much of the post-match reaction has centered around what has been the Gunners' Achilles heel for the past decade - the defence.

Even with a change in formation, they remain vulnerable at the back, and it's an area in which head coach Mikel Arteta will almost certainly need to overhaul if his side are to close the gap on the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United next season.

So with the summer transfer window set to open at the end of the season, it would come as no surprise if supporters are calling for a defensive reshuffle ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

There will be at least one new defender in the squad as William Saliba's Arsenal career gets underway following a year out on loan at Saint-Etienne.

But who would be the perfect partner for the France wonderkid?

Well, the popular answer would be RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano - A player long linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium. Although with funds limited, the Gunners may have to sell before making a move for the 21-year-old.

And that's where former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat could play a surprise role.

The German transfer guru is now the sporting director at Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart and football.london understands they have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos on loan.

Interestingly, Mislintat was responsible for the signing of the Greek centre-back from PAS Giannina in January 2018.

Of course with Mavropanos valued at £2.16m on transfermarkt, a permanent sale would suit the Gunners a lot more as it helps raise funds for a potential deal for Upamecano.

And with the defender out of contract at the end of next season, this summer is their last chance to earn a transfer fee unless they tie him down to a new deal.

So it could be that Mislintat plays a role in Arsenal finding the perfect partner for Saliba this summer?
