The surprise name to rival Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard for iconic Arsenal shirt number

Arsenal's iconic No.10 shirt has become vacant.

Worn by the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Robin van Persie, Jack Wilshere and strangely William Gallas, the most recent incumbent was Mesut Ozil who had it since the 2018/2019 season.

However, the 32-year-old's time at Arsenal has officially come to an end.

On Sunday afternoon it was finally announced that the former Germany international has signed for his boyhood club Fenerbahce on a free transfer.

Now that Ozil has joined Fenerbahce, the No.10 squad number is immediately up for grabs at the Emirates Stadium

But who is in the running to take it on?

Well, reports have indicated that Emile Smith Rowe would, unsurprisingly, like the No.10 as opposed to the No.32 currently on his back, a result of his relatively lowly squad position when numbers were formulated before the start of the season.

In addition, with Martin Odegaard expected to complete a six-month loan move from Real Madrid, he will, at least for the next six months, seamlessly step into Ozil’s place in the squad – both as creator and No.10.

However, a surprise name could pose a challenge to Smith Rowe and Odegaard to replace Ozil as the club's new no.10 - should the Norway international seal a deal.

Alexandre Lacazette has previously teased that he favours no.10.

Taking to Instagram shortly after Ozil was given the no.10, Lacazette joked that he was the real owner of the shirt number after posing for a picture wearing the midfielder's training top.

"The Real Number 10," Lacazette posted." @m10_official sorry bro."

Interestingly, Lacazette did wear no.10 at Lyon for several seasons prior to joining Arsenal where he was given the no.9 instead.

Upon arriving in north London in the summer of 2017, Wilshere was still at the club and Ozil clearly got his request in first when the midfielder was released on a free transfer 12 months later.

Will the Frenchman be third time lucky?
