The surprise decision Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang nearly took before his second Norwich penalty

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doesn't need many chances to score and Norwich City learnt that the hard way this weekend.

The striker missed his first big chance of the game but with Carrow Road incensed at VAR allowing him another bite at the cherry, he calmly slotted home.

Cool on the exterior, the 30-year-old admitted his mind was all over the place before the retake and that he very nearly gambled Arsenal's chances of an equaliser.

"I changed my usual routine a bit because of that (being with Daniel Farke at Borrusia Dortmund) and I tried to look at Krul all the way before choosing where to shoot. But I didn't hit it the ball properly and he saved it," Aubameyang said describing his initial miss to Arsenal's matchday programme.

"You can imagine how relieved I was when the referee told me that he was checking VAR for encroachment.

"This time, I told myself 'you can't miss this one as well. Yet somehow, don't ask me why, just before taking the second pen, I was thinking about doing a Penenka!"

Ljungberg on fixing Arsenal's defence

Krul had already been booked in the lead up to the first penalty for trying to distract Aubameyang. He toed the line again for the second penalty but didn't quite have the same effect.

Arsenal's top scorer stepped up and whipped the ball to the Dutchman's right and into the side-nettings to level the scores.

With the goal, he became the top-scoring player on a single week day since joining the Gunners in 2018 (he has now scored 28 league goals on Sunday)."

"I could hear Krul shouting at me trying to mess with me and unsettle me," he added.

"So I decided to to just slot it on the left hand side which was far less of a gamble than the Panenka.

"I really wanted us to push for a win at the end but I was also conscious that Norwich were dangerous on counter attacks. Bernd (Leno) saved us a few times and we had to settle for a draw."

Returning to Emirates Stadium for Freddie Ljungberg's first home game as interim boss, Aubemayang also stressed the importance of being feared in north London once again.

"It's Freddie's first home match as head coach so it's a special ocassion and I really hope that you (Arsenal fans) will all be behind him and us," the club captain said.

"We are at home tonight and we have to make it a tough place to visit again. We have to be the boss at home.

"The Emirates has to become a fortress again."
