The surprise David Luiz statistic that will delight Pepe and Aubameyang at Arsenal this season

David Luiz is on the verge of swapping Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium in one of the more surprising deadline day deals of this year.

The defender is currently undergoing a medical at Arsenal after the two clubs agreed a fee of £8m.

Luiz is believed to have pushed for the move over the past week, with football.london understanding that the 32-year-old has been disruptive around the training ground in order to force a move.

The Gunners have been on the search for defensive cover throughout the summer, and the need for a defender was only intensified with the departure of club captain Laurent Koscielny.

Arsenal conceded goals thanks to a number of individual mistakes last season, and will be looking for that to change in the coming campaign.

While he is known to be erratic on the pitch, Unai Emery will be hoping that the addition of the Premier League experience of Luiz will help to solidify his back line.

But, it's not only in the defensive side of the team where Luiz will contribute. The 32-year-old is confident on the ball, and is happy to play passes that will benefit the attacking side of a team's game, should they come off.

Arsenal: 2019/20 season preview

During the 2018/19 season the Brazilian player came top of the list for the number of through balls played in the Premier League. The defender played 41, eight more than teammate Jorginho, who was second in the list.

The soon-to-be Arsenal defender was also above players such as James Maddison, Christian Eriksen and Mo Salah in the number of through balls played to teammates.

While the player has been bought in to predominantly contribute in defensive areas, the statistic shows that he may well contribute in other areas too.
