The surprise claim Manchester United legend has made about Liverpool new signing Sepp van den Berg

Liverpool have been told they are in a no-lose situation with the signing of Dutch teenager Sepp van den Berg.

The 17-year-old defender became the club's first signing of the summer last month when he joined for an initial fee of £1.3million from PEC Zwolle.

The Reds beat Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Champions League semi-finalists Ajax to the signature of the highly-rated youngster.

Van den Berg, who made his debut for Zwolle in March 2018, made 22 appearances for the club.

And former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, who was in charge of Zwolle for the second half of last season, believes Liverpool will be in profit even if Van den Berg doesn't become a success at Anfield.

"Sepp is a very talented player, we've said that many times at PEC Zwolle," said Stam, who has now taken over at Dutch rivals Feyenoord.

"We all know how this world works, so it's inevitable that a player makes a transfer at a certain point in his career.

"We know that English and Spanish clubs scout all over the world, but especially in the Netherlands for talented Dutch defenders, because they're known to be good with their feet.

"Those clubs usually have enough money lying around to take a risk and sign a few of them and see if it pays off in the long run.

"If it works out, great. If it doesn't, they'll probably sell them for more money than before.

"In the end it's up to the clubs, but I wish Sepp all the best and I hope he'll turn out to be a big success story at Liverpool."
