The Super Worm Moon 2020 is set to grace Edinburgh's skies tonight

Monday night will see the first supermoon of the year - the Super Worm Moon.

The title of Worm Moon comes from it being the last full moon of winter, and relates to the earthworms that will begin make their first appearance and soften the soil at this time of year.

However a supermoon itself happens when the moon's elliptical orbit is at its closest approach to the Earth, making it appear much larger and brighter than usual in the night sky.

The stronger gravitational pull from a supermoon can also cause stronger tides that will sit at roughly two inches higher than usual.

The moon is set to peak at roughly 5.50pm tonight, but it should be visible through the evening, eventually setting in the west at around 7am on Tuesday.

That is ofcourse if Edinburgh's weather allows it. The Met Office have predicted that heavy rain will ensue just in time for rush hour from around 5pm onwards, potentially covering the best views of the super worm moon.

If that is the case, there are more supermoons to come this year that you can keep an eye out for instead, the next two will take place on the 8th April and 7th May.
