The Sun appears to have jumped the gun on a supposed “row” over explicit sex scenes in London Spy, BBC2’s new drama starring Bond actor Ben Whishaw.
In an “exclusive” story, the paper wrote: “Ofcom is to investigate BBC2’s London Spy over after complaints over its explicit sex scenes and nudity”. (This was later changed online to “Ofcom is considering an investigation”.)
Yet when Monkey got in touch with Ofcom, the watchdog said there is as yet no investigation and it has received only one complaint. Instead, it is merely assessing the complaint, which is what it does with all messages from the public, no matter how trivial/harebrained/prejudiced. (The 13 complaints – from an audience of 2.5 million – referred in the article were made to the BBC.)
The Sun does quote the Evangelical Alliance, an organisation that issued a report in 2012 saying “We believe both habitual homoerotic sexual activity without repentance and public promotion of such activity are inconsistent with faithful church membership.” It was hardly likely to be a fan of a drama involving sex between two men, no matter how good.
