The summer signing Swansea City are yet to see the best of and the stat that offers hope for the future

Graham Potter claims Swansea City fans are yet to see the best of Barrie McKay since his move to South Wales from Nottingham Forest last year.

The Scot has fallen behind the likes of Bersant Celina and Nathan Dyer in the pecking order of late, starting just one league match in 2019 so far.

McKay was the most experienced of Swansea's six summer recruits last year, despite only turning 24 years of age as recently as December.

And Potter admits that McKay - whose total of seven assists in all competitions is the joint-best tally along with Celina this season - has been misunderstood at times in his first campaign at the Liberty Stadium.

"He's quality. It's never been questioned. The things he does in training, I'm sure if you speak to the players, they'll say the same thing, he's got amazing quality," said the Swansea manager.

"He's been a bit unlucky in that he plays in a similar position to Bersant, that's probably his best position. On the other side Nathan has done really well and he's probably suffered from that.

"Sometimes he has a look that's he's quite relaxed and not necessarily trying but that's how he plays all the time. His sprints look effortless.

"He's probably had a bit of a period where there's been a little bit of a misunderstanding. But he's been great. He's improved and wants to help the team.

"When he's come in he's impacted things and he's got real potential."

Celina has undoubtedly been the best of Swansea's 2018 summer signings, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists in his first season at SA1.

And when asked if McKay's lack of game time has come as a result of Celina's impressive debut campaign with the Swans, Potter responded: "A little bit.

"I think he'll end up being better playing central. He played there away at Brentford, he got an assist for the first goal and impacts a lot of transitions. Against Sheffield Wednesday at home, he plays Connor (Roberts) through with a nice weighted pass that is cut back for Bersant.

"But it's just the combinations we've got with Nathan, Wayne (Routledge), Oli (McBurnie), Bersant and Barrie, it's just part of the competition you need in a group.

"I don't think that our supporters have seen the very best of him, I don't think they've seen the true quality that he has. Now it's our job to help him get that and show what a player he can be."

McKay has scored two goals in 28 appearances in all competitions so far this term.
