The stunning plans for Caernarfon Castle's battlements aimed at increasing access and revenue

Further details and images of the stunning plans for historic Caernarfon Castle have been revealed.

Heritage group Cadw wants to introduce new and improved visitor facilities and vertical access to the battlements from the King’s Gate within the 13th Century castle.

Under £3.3m plans submitted on their behalf by Buttress Architects the plans include a glazed lift, cafe and viewing platform.

This project has emerged from a period of considered strategic review by Cadw, both in terms of Caernarfon Castle itself, and in the wider strategic context of Cadw’s anticipated direction of funding - with an expected reduction in funds.

A detailed application has now been submitted with more images and details on the proposal.

A Design and Access report says the application seeks planning permission for:

• Inserting new floor plates into all towers of the King’s Gate.

• Viewing platforms and seating atop the King’s Gate.

• Inserting vertical lift access from ground to second floor.

• Improvements to visitor facilities including the installation of a new catering facility, new WCs, and a changing places facility.

• New interpretation throughout the King’s Gate

They said it provide the first ever level access to the upper battlements of any similar UK World Heritage site, providing a unique experience for those with mobility issues.

Speaking previously, minister for culture, tourism and sport, Lord Elis-Thomas said: “Caernarfon Castle is a hugely significant attraction, one of the most well-known castles in the UK and it is recognised internationally.

“This project is focussed on enhancing this world class offer. We want to drive up visitor numbers for the monument and of course Caernarfon town by making it more accessible to a much wider audience."
