The stunning ECHO pictures which showed Liverpool at its best this year

In a year that saw Liverpool FC crowned champions of Europe, visits from royalty and record breaking weather, ECHO photographers have had plenty of opportunities to showcase their talents.

For Liverpool, major events took place all year and the ECHO were there to report on it. 

Here we bring you 16 stunning images selected by our award-winning team of photographers who handpicked their best images from a rollercoaster year for the city.

Chief Photographer Colin's first picture comes from a spectacular bonfire held in Birkenhead , as those in the local area gathered to watch it.

Speaking about the photo, he said: "Bonfire night but always time for a bit of footie too!"

Bobby Bimpson, two (Colin Lane)

This picture comes from a report published in October , as Melanie Bimpson said she "wouldn't change a thing" about her beautiful two-year-old, Bobby.

Colin said: "A smile to melt the heart".

Stormy New Brighton, Wirral with high winds and high tides. (Colin Lane)

This dramatic picture was taken at New Brighton, as high tides, high winds and striking sunlight hit.

River of Light Festival fireworks display (Colin Lane)

A spectacular fireworks display was captured in November, as the River of Light festival brought stunning scenes to the city.

Colin said: "River of Light fireworks display as the city holds another waterfront classic.

"Taken from the roof of the Hilton Hotel in Chavasse Park."

Extinction Rebellion climate change protesters (Colin Lane)

As Extinction Rebellion climate change protesters caught national headlines this year, Colin also snapped a protest closer to home.

Colin said the demonstrators staged a silent protest, at Mann Island.

Two spectators could be seen taking in this amazing view earlier in the year.

Colin said: "Sitting pretty and a wonderful waterfront view."

Champions of Europe (Andrew Teebay)

As Liverpool turned red after Liverpool's Champions League final win in Madrid, Andrew caught this celebratory picture.

He said: "I was on the Press Bus in front of Liverpool FC's Champions League victory parade around the city, waiting for Jurgen Klopp to come to the front of the bus to celebrate with the team, which he did on the Strand to amazing scenes."

Spring clean (Andrew Teebay)

Andrew said: "I was driving along the Strand when I noticed Liverpool's famous Liver Building clock faces being given a Spring clean by abseiling workers, showing how big the clock actually is."

Easter heatwave (Andrew Teebay)

During the Easter heatwave, this incredible photo was taken in Ainsdale .

Andrew said: "I was looking for a weather picture during this year's Easter heatwave, and was lucky enough to see Stephen Ramsden and his beautiful seven-year-old horse, Stan, cooling off in the sea at Ainsdale."

Another stunning picture taken in Ainsdale, as a paraglider was caught flying off into the sunset.

Royal Liver Bird (Andrew Teebay)

Merseyside saw many royal visits this year, from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visiting Cammell Laird to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall visiting the Baltic Triangle.

Andrew said: "It's not everyday you get to photograph the Duchess of Cornwall standing in front of the mural 'All Liverpool's Liver Birds', by artist Paul Curtis, during a visit to the city."

Dome of Home (Andrew Teebay)

Andrew said: "Canon Vianne Poucin De Wouilt from SS Peter and Paul Church 'Dome of Home', New Brighton. [He] climbed up onto the roof to show us the panoramic views of the Wirral coastline."

James Maloney

The Prince of Wales is given a leather handbag (James Maloney)

Another royal visitor came to Merseyside in February of this year , as the Prince of Wales was given a leather handbag by Keith Hanshaw, owner of The Satchel Company.

The pair met during a visit to the Royal Albert Dock to cement its newly-acquired royal status.

James said: "What I love most about this photo is the expressions on both faces – it reminds me of the comedy sketch 'Suits you, sir'

Jockey Davy Russell after winning the 2019 Randox Aintree Grand National on Tiger Roll (James Maloney)

James caught jockey Davy Russell pouring some water over his horse hours after winning the 2019 Randox Aintree Grand National on Tiger Roll.

The stunning picture was taken in April, earlier this year.

James said: "The finish line of the world's biggest steeplechase – the Grand National – is chaotic at best and trying to get in the right position to get one of the key shots is of the utmost importance."

Taken back in May, this beautiful picture captures the child's wonder.

The visual kinetic display was made up of digitally interlinked columns of patterns of light and sound and was on display for visitors.

Sefton Park (James Maloney)

Frankie and Pixie were caught enjoying the sun in Sefton Park earlier this year.

James said: "Whenever the mercury starts to rise, the Echo's photographers are always tasked with coming up with a variety of weather pictures.

"Sefton Park is always the best place to head to, but on this occasion it was quite late in the afternoon and there weren't many people around.

"Thankfully, I spotted a lady walking her two cute dogs and, with the help of some all important props, created this very cute weather picture of Frankie and Pixie."
