The stunning David Turnbull Celtic return that calls Neil Lennon's softly softly approach into question

It's been a season of few bright spots for Celtic, whether on or off the pitch.

Their title defence was effectively over by the turn of the year, with the only question remaining when, not if, Rangers will deny them the fabled 10 In A Row.

You couldn't accuse the Parkhead club of failing to invest in the summer, with Albian Ajeti, Shane Duffy, Vasilis Barkas, Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt all coming in.

None of those players has had anything like the impact required, but there is one positive in the form of the the remaining summer signing - Scotland Under-21 international David Turnbull.

The youngster has earned comparisons to Celtic legends Paul McStay and Tommy Burns and is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Indeed, many supporters have been left frustrated that the midfielder wasn't introduced earlier by manager Neil Lennon - and the numbers suggest they have a point.

After making his move from Motherwell, Turnbull struggled to break in to the Celtic team.

He managed just 154 minutes in seven Premiership games up to December 10, an average of 22 minutes per appearance.

It was then that Turnbull's season changed, as he was trusted to start in the final Europa League match of the campaign.

David Turnbull has been tipped to be a Celtic star by ex-Parkhead hero Tony Watt (Rob Casey/SNS Group)

He provided a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win over Lille and since then his output has been extraordinary.

The 21-year-old is averaging 2.5 key passes per game, the best record of any player in the division.

A key pass is defined as the final ball before the receiving player takes a shot, and the youngster is ahead of every other player in the Premiership.

That could be put down to Turnbull being given time to adapt to the Celtic system but he averaged 3.6 in his five games for Motherwell before making the switch. If he wasn't ready to play right away the numbers don't reflect that.

His key pass record for Celtic would put him level sixth in Europe, just behind the likes of Toni Kroos and Jadon Sancho and above Josip Ilicic and Lionel Messi.

Since making the breakthrough in that Lille game Turnbull's return in terms of goals and assists has also been superb.

In 17 matches including that Europa League tie he's scored seven times and provided five assists.

Despite that Turnbull has completed 90 minutes in just three of those games.

While a certain degree of caution is to be expected in terms of not overworking a young player who has undergone knee surgery, Celtic fans may wonder why one of their most productive players is so often removed early.

And they'll certainly be wondering what could have been if Turnbull had been given his chance before a dead rubber European tie in December.
