The stunning but little-known ruins hidden away near Bristol

Just over 30 miles from Bristol, jutting out at the end of a peninsula, lies an enigmatic site in ruins.

Brean Down Fort, in Somerset, dates back to 10,000 BC. There has even been evidence mammoths and woolly rhinos once roamed the spot.

It is home to the archaeological remains of a Roman temple and there was once an Iron Age hill-fort on the east side. Its banks and ditches are still visible.

A major fort was built there in 1864 to defend Britain against a possible Napoleonic invasion.

It now lies in ruin, but you can still see examples of the role it played in military history.

In the Second World War, bomber planes practised flying around Brean. A concrete arrow on the top of the down, which is still there, guided planes to their practice ranges.

Soldiers also practised shooting at targets in the bay at Weston-Super-Mare. The machine gun emplacements can be seen to this day.

You can watch our video from inside the fort at the top of this page.
