The strict rules that Bristol Rovers must stick to when picking team for EFL Trophy tie with Plymouth Argyle

Bristol Rovers make the trip to Plymouth Argyle tomorrow night to take part in their first EFL Trophy group game.

The Gas will also face Chelsea under-21s and Swindon Town in the tournament, which has been renamed the Leasing.com Trophy this season for sponsorship reasons.

It is a competition that often provokes derision from fans, but the Gas did well last season, eventually being knocked out live on Sky Sports in a semi-final against Sunderland.

A number of teams opt to field weakened sides in the competition, but plenty of them risk fines of £5k by doing so.

That is due to strict rules governing the strength of starting XIs that EFL sides put out, with the competition's governing body keen to see 'full strength sides' fielded.

It means that at least four players in the Gas' starting XI must fit one section of the below criteria to be a qualifying player.

Rovers' staring line-up for Saturday's defeat to Burton Albion was: Jaakkola, Hare, Kilgour, Davies, Craig, Leahy, Ogogo, Clarke, Eupson, Smith, Clarke-Harris

The Gas' next league game is at home to Accrington Stanley on Saturday. Barring injury, Jordi van Stappershoef is almost guaranteed to start that game due to Anssi Jaakkola being on international duty.
